There are some disadvantages to using a scooter. They can be hazardous in bad weather. They are not too easily seen, when you are in a congested area of traffic. If you are one to worry about your hair, you can count on re-grooming it at your destination. But probably the most important factor is that of general safety. You don't wear a seat belt. You don't have a lot of steel and metal around you to protect you. Your percentage of getting hurt in an accident is much higher.

You might want to get a performance carb and/or a new exhaust pipe. You'll need to replace these two components (and probably the air box) at the same time to get the best performance increase. The engine is basically just an air pump. The more air you can move through the engine, the more power you get. Adding a bigger carb draws more air (and more fuel) into the engine. But you restrict the amount of added air if you don't change the air box.

Compression Check. If you just acquired your scooter, you should first do a full inspection before you try to get it running. If this is the case, I'd do a compression check first because it's easy to do. First, check the quantity and condition of the engine oil. Hook up or purchase a good battery. Leave out the spark plug and crank the scooter for ~5 seconds. This helps to circulate the oil. Let it set for ~15 seconds and then do it again. It's not a good idea to continuously crank the starter because it can overheat and wear out prematurely.
